A logical reasoning with preference

چکیده
In a decision making context, multiple choices of actions are usually ooered to solve a particular problem. Consequently, the question of preferences among the actions will occur. The ordering of recommended actions by preference is made by taking into account the states of the universe of discourse. We develop here a logic L p for reasoning about preferences in such circumstances. The language of the logic is propositional extended with a special binary relation of preference among formulae. The model theory of the logic is studied and the soundness and completeness theorem is established. 1 L p informally The study of concepts in which moral philosophers take an interest is categorized by von Wright 4] into three groups: deontological, value-concepts and anthropological. The notion of preference or betterness belongs to the group of value-concepts and holds a prominent place in decision making context. There are several application domains where preference need to be represented, for example, medicine and economics. In particular, in oncology there are preferences which if contravened may rise hazardous situation, for example, there is a preference to administer the drug taxol before cisplatin than after in the treatment of cancer 3]. Therefore, a formal study of preference is recognised as an important goal yet to be attempted. To achieve this we construct a formal logic of preference in this paper. There are several types of preferences that are relative to state or circumstances. For example, in the treatment of deep-vein thrombosis, preferring subcutaneous administration of heparin to intravenous administration is a preference between two diierent kinds of action. On the other hand, preferring health to illness is a preference between two properties. Considering the importance of actions and properties in the context of preference, we study them rst 1

One of the central issues in the area of knowledge representation and reasoning is common sense reasoning. This includes logics of knowledge and belief, nonmonotonic reasoning, truth-maintenance, and belief revision. Within these elds the notion of a consistent belief state is the crucial one. Additionally, there is a growing interest in partial information states. Within this interest informat...
متن کاملA Logic for Reasoning about Action, Preference, and Commitment
In this paper, we study the logical semantics of actions, preference, and commitment. The semantics is based on the possible world models for dynamic logic of actions. A binary preference relation between possible worlds is associated with the model. Then the preference between actions are determined by comparing that of their consequences. While the preference will influence the agent’s choice...
متن کاملA Semantic View on Reasoning about Priorities (extended Abstract)
This paper gives a logical analysis in semantic terms of reasoning about preference relations. A method is proposed for extending logics for reasoning with prioritised information with means to express information about priorities as premises, and for deening the logical consequences of such premises. The method is rst presented in general terms and then applied to two existing systems, priorit...
متن کاملReasoning with Partial Preference Models PhD Dissertation Proposal
Classical decision theory provides a normative framework for representing and reasoning with complex preferences. Straightforward application of this theory to automate decision making is difficult due to high cost of eliciting preferences. The objective of this thesis is to develop a flexible decision-theoretic framework for eliciting and reasoning with preferences and to apply the tools and t...
متن کاملProbability Distributions over Structured Spaces
Our goal is to develop general-purpose techniques for probabilistic reasoning and learning in structured spaces. These spaces are characterized by complex logical constraints on what constitutes a possible world. We propose a tractable formalism, called probabilistic sentential decision diagrams, and show it effectively learns structured probability distributions in two applications: product co...
متن کاملAugmenting Weight Constraints with Complex Preferences
Preference-based reasoning is a form of commonsense reasoning that makes many problems easier to express and sometimes more likely to have a solution. In this paper, we present an approach to introducing preferences in the weight constraint construct, which is a very useful programming construct widely adopted in Answer Set Programming (ASP). We show, mainly by means of examples, the usefulness...
